Hakuhodo J004G Round & Flat Eyeshadow Brush

Hakuhodo’s J004G or B004G ($20; hakuhodousa.com) brush is quite a popular brush used for laying down shadows and one of their basic eyeshadow brushes to have. It is described as “round and flat” which is quite accurate and the shape and size is somewhat similar to the MAC 239 flat shader brush.

J004G is made from super soft goat hair and is quite dense, with a fairly rounded edge. It is great for eyeshadow placement on the lid, not the best for blending color, but great for precise placement of powder shadows and some creams. I found cream products a little difficult to wash off from the brush, but it is fabulous with powders. The brush head is quite similar to the MAC 239, the 239 being a bit more flatter, and less dense, so it is better with loose shadows and pigments. For pressed powder shadows, I prefer the J004G since it is softer and really good at picking up product. It also is a good brush to soften things around the lower lash line, which is something I also use the MAC 239 for. Like most brushes from Hakuhodo, this one too is well made, sturdy and has held up pretty well after multiple washes. Overall, its a lovely basic brush to add to your collection, not a must have if you have the 239, but definitely nice to have if you don’t and don’t mind another laydown brush in your collection!
